LULAC: Texas Governor Heard Us Loud And Clear
Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Issues Statewide Medical Alert and Four Hours Later Mandatory Mask Order Is Issued
Washington, DC - Domingo Garcia, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the following statement late Thursday:
“Texas Governor Greg Abbott has answered our call for action which LULAC made early Thursday morning and 11.4 million Latinos plus many others across the state will be safer from the coronavirus starting Friday at noon when the order goes into effect. It requires everyone from ten years old on up to wear masks in businesses, buildings and spaces open to the public. It also requires masks outside, in public spaces where people can’t stay six feet apart from others. Governor Abbott is making some exceptions like people eating, voting and going to church but at the same time, he says people who are protesting must wear masks. Finally, his order applies to counties with 20 or more positive COVID-19 cases.
This is not everything LULAC urged Governor Abbott to do but he will have to live with the consequences of the gaps he is leaving. Everywhere in Texas where people are gathering in large numbers and not practicing social distancing or wearing masks, they are exposing themselves and others to danger. LULAC urges him to close the loopholes which he is leaving open for reasons only he knows. The lives of all Texans are at stake and LULAC will not stop fighting for the safety of our community which has suffered too high a price already.”
