Nation's Largest and Oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization "Pray for Texas" Fundraising Campaign Closes In On One Million Dollars for Victims and Survivors
Uvalde, Texas – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) distributed the second round of donations Saturday to families of the victims and survivors of the Robb Elementary School shooting last May in Uvalde, Texas. The campaign has raised nearly one million dollars in the organization's historic nationwide campaign, the largest in LULAC's 93 years.
"LULAC is grateful to all those who have opened their hearts and given whatever they could," says Domingo Garcia, LULAC national president. "This money comes at just the right time as the families impacted by this tragedy head into their first holiday season without the loved ones who were lost and those who still carry the scars of that dark day. Nothing will ever replace their pain, but this outpouring of love shows them they are not alone or forgotten by so many people across our country and Puerto Rico."
Aileen Avikova, a small business owner from North Texas, traveled to Uvalde to join those in attendance for the meeting with the affected families. The daughter of immigrant parents was so moved by the tragedy that she donated $91,000 to help in their recovery. "I wanted to do whatever I could to let the families and community know that we love them and are with them during this very difficult time. Coming to meet them allows me to convey in a very personal way how sorry we are for their loss and to offer our support and strength," said Avikova.
LULAC calls for gun law reforms, including keeping firearms out of the hands of people with a history of mental illness and prohibiting anyone under 21 from purchasing AR-15 firearms. "Texas LULAC joins with the families of Uvalde and all communities terrorized by school shootings," said Rodolfo Rosales Jr., Texas LULAC state director. "Americans are demanding meaningful changes in the law and an end to politicizing the issue of firearms in public spaces," he added.
