Excitement Is Building Ahead Of The LULAC National Convention In San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 25-30

Nation’s Largest and Oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization Sees Strong Response for LULAC’s First National Convention and Exposition Since 2019

Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announced preparations for the 2022 LULAC National Convention and Exposition in San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 25-30. The organization’s signature annual event theme is “One LULAC United: Pioneering Latino Activism for 93 years”. Thousands of LULAC members, community allies, federal, state and local civil servants, and corporate partners will attend from throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Together, they plan to examine some of the most timely and relevant issues facing the more than 62.1 million Latinos in the United States and on the island.

“We are very excited about the response this year’s LULAC national convention and expo is receiving because members and allies are eager to once again connect in person and continue the important work before us. The enthusiasm for the events has been so great that all four hotels are sold out,” says Sindy Benavides, LULAC National Chief Executive Officer. “We have been working for months on a line-up that includes notable experts and thought leaders in federal employee training and this year are proud to report that we have a record number of federal employees in attendance,” continued Benavides. “We will also examine some of the critical issues confronting us. These include protecting the environment and climate change migration, the state of public education in our nation, conditions affecting America’s Latino military veterans, solutions and preventions against violence with the use of firearms, LGBTQIA+ intersectionality and impact, equity in representation in Latina/o higher education, and rebuilding our communities by addressing food insecurity and combating election misinformation. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most comprehensive programs LULAC has ever delivered at one event. However, the issues are too pressing that we cannot delay developing and implementing strategies to step up how we address each of these,” said Benavides.

Also, preparations are ready to connect with those members who cannot travel to Puerto Rico. They can access select portions of the program through online video streaming. “Most LULAC members from the mainland are not attending because of concerns over the pandemic and the financial costs,” says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. “I am very aware of these difficult circumstances, especially for our first in-person convention since 2019. Also, every member's voice matters. LULAC has been a grassroots organization of advocacy volunteers for 93 years, and we must be inclusive in the spirit of our history. I look forward to an open, productive expo and convention,” Garcia adds.
