LULAC Welcomes President Biden’s Immigration Plan

Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Says Help for 11-Million Immigrants and Other Executive Actions Long Overdue

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has issued the following statement on President Biden’s executive actions proposing new laws that will give undocumented immigrants the chance to become citizens and create a path for refugees and asylum seekers to gain new protections.

Domingo Garcia - LULAC National President
“LULAC welcomes this new day in America when millions of hard working men and women, along with their children can see that democracy still works. They are witnesses that a black woman can be a vice-president and that four Latinos can serve on President Biden’s Cabinet. Also, there is hope for tens of thousands of recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA), also known as Dreamers who were brought here as children years ago and through no fault of their own have lived in fear of deportation from the only country they know. Now, President Biden has signed a memorandum directing officials to ‘preserve and fortify’ the DACA program. So too, the families and individuals who fled their countries because of violence and danger in the face of failed economies can look forward to a day very soon when new laws that will give them opportunities to live and work legally in the United States. None of this will come without a fight in Congress because there are some who still choose to oppose immigration reform but LULAC is ready and we will not give up until the work is done. As the author of the Texas Dream Act in 2001, I am committed to work with LULAC to make sure all Americans can have equal opportunities.”

Sindy Benavides - LULAC National Chief Executive Officer
“LULAC is moved by President Biden’s courage in acknowledging the need for immediate action to aggressively deal with the health and economic impact of COVID-19 on our nation’s Latino and black communities. We are also proud to see the swearing in of the nation’s first woman as Vice-President of the United States and that she is African-American. President Biden offers our nation new hope for gender equity and equality in our country. As noteworthy is his commitment to economic assistance for countries in Central America that refugees and asylum seekers have fled out of sheer fear and in an effort to survive. The devastation caused by natural disasters in recent years compounded by the violence and economic instability have only added to the desperate situation that fueled violence, kidnappings, murders and extortion forcing entire families to flee. Now, the United States can provide the desperately needed aid to help their governments restore a semblance of order, rebuild their infrastructure and give protection to loved ones who were left behind. Indeed, we are morally obligated as a nation to extend this humanitarian assistance which has been denied in recent years for political reasons. LULAC calls upon all members of Congress to come together in a new spirit of unity for the future of America and support these immediate immigration remedies.”
