LULAC SUPPORTS CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC LEADERS IN OPPOSING TRUMP-ERA IMMIGRATION POLICIES

Washington, DC - In a unified stance against the potential revival of anti-immigrant Trump-era policies, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation's oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization, stands firmly with the members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. LULAC supports their opposition to regressive immigration measures currently under consideration in Senate and White House negotiations.
Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President, emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation in addressing the longstanding issues within the broken immigration system. "LULAC supports our Latino elected leaders in Congress who are standing up and speaking truth to power," said Garcia. "For too long, we have been the political piñata, enduring broken promises that fail to address decades of neglect and abuse through an outdated immigration policy that is not working. It appears that many Republican elite leaders prefer to keep a broken immigration system with exploited immigrant workers trafficked sexually abused women, instead of finding a compromise that allows legal immigration and cracks down on the cartels and human smugglers."
Garcia continued, “My message to the Republicans is what would Jesus do this Christmas time of the year? Would he call for building walls, concentration camps, split families, and turn back refugees fleeing violence and poverty?”
LULAC National Immigration Chair Lydia Guzman echoed Garcia's sentiments, stating, "LULAC cannot wait silently by any longer and allow a return to the ill-conceived and evil immigration policies under the Trump administration." Guzman noted the global nature of the migration phenomenon and called for economic relief and diplomatic cooperation between the United States and nations grappling with desperate and impoverished populations fleeing dangerous conditions.
"As the League of United Latin American Citizens, we believe that true solutions to the immigration crisis require a comprehensive, humane, and just approach. We urge Congress to reject any proposals that would resurrect policies causing harm to vulnerable communities," says Guzman.
This united stance aligns with the upcoming press conference by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and leading Congressional Democrats, scheduled for Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at 3:00 pm EST, on the House Triangle, United States Capitol, Washington, DC 20016.
LULAC encourages the public to stand with us in urging President Joe Biden and Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to reject any Trump-era immigration policies proposed by Republicans during the ongoing supplemental aid package negotiations. Leaders from the ACLU, Human Rights First, Immigration Hub, and additional congressional speakers are expected to join this call for a just and compassionate immigration system.
