LULAC Promotes Latino Voter Mobilization During its 90th Annual Convention in Key Electoral State of Wisconsin

Nation’s Oldest & Largest Hispanic Civil Rights Organization Calls for Massive Civic Participation Ahead of 2020 Elections

MILWAUKEE (July 11, 2019) – Today, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) hosted a convening with Facebook to mobilize Latinos of all ages to vote. As Pew Research found, for the first time, Hispanics will be the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the electorate in the 2020 election, making their participation even more important.

“Latinos make up nearly 20% of the United States’ population and our voice is truly our vote,” said Special Advisor to the LULAC National President on Civic Engagement & Elections Joe Henry. “We are a young community with 28 million eligible members ready to vote. We cherish America's democracy and will continue to fight for the right to vote.”

LULAC strongly encourages the active civic participation of all eligible Latinos at all levels of government and at all times of the year -- not only during election years. By registering to vote, voting, participating in town halls and community involvement, Latinos have the power to directly transform their respective communities. LULAC also encourages all eligible immigrants to become U.S. citizens and demands that the Citizenship and Immigration Services streamline and expedite the processing of citizenship applications pending in a backlog for up to two years.

“The 2020 national elections are a critical opportunity to position our communities of color towards a better and brighter future,” said LULAC CEO Sindy Benavides. “Democracy and voting are one of the most powerful tools we have to harness our potential to organize and advocate for a more equitable future. We urge our members and followers to use your voice, register to vote, and turn out at the polls.”
