A LULAC LEADER IS HONORED UPON HIS PASSING FOR A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY

In the quiet town of Midwest City, Oklahoma, a beacon of service and inspiration was dimmed as Reymundo Madrid, a LULAC leader, passed away at 76. His departure on November 24th left a void not only in the lives of his family but also in the hearts of the countless individuals he touched through a lifetime devoted to service in the league.
Reymundo's journey began in Presidio, Texas. It took a significant turn when he returned from his service in Vietnam as a courageous Air Force combat veteran. He served his country with honor and retired after 21 years and seven months, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and sacrifice.
Tragically, his exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War manifested itself half a century later, leading to his battle with cancer. Despite the hardships, Reymundo's indomitable spirit prevailed, and he continued to serve his community until his last days.
Reymundo's family was at the core of his life. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and three of his four children, Reymundo Madrid Jr., Jason Madrid, and Shana Smith. His daughter, Katharina "Kat" Madrid, preceded his passing. He was a devoted father and a guiding force for many who looked up to him.
His daughter reflects, "My dad was always on a pedestal for me, and I wanted to share him with everyone." This sentiment encapsulates the essence of Reymundo's impact. Beyond being a hero to his family, he emerged as a father figure for an entire community, especially for Latino youths facing challenges.
Following his military service, Reymundo dedicated himself to working with the youth, becoming involved with the Eagle Ridge Institute. This nonprofit organization focused on uplifting at-risk Latino youths, providing drug and gang prevention programs, and encouraging educational pursuits. During this time, he became deeply involved with LULAC, forming adult and youth councils.
Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President, aptly captured Reymundo's legacy: "LULAC honors Rey Madrid for his service and dedication to Latino youths. This is the league's work, and there are no words to fully express our respect and gratitude. We send our deepest condolences to the Madrid family."
Reymundo's daughter further emphasized the impact of his work, stating, "I feel like my father was just one part of this big heart of the city." His influence extended beyond familial ties, resonating with everyone who crossed paths with this compassionate and selfless leader.
Reymundo Madrid's commitment to community service, primarily through LULAC, is an enduring example of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to embrace service, education, and upliftment, echoing the belief that by helping each other, communities can achieve greatness.
